Issued and Redeemed Pynchon Bank $5 Rarity

    Springfield, MA - Pynchon Bank $5 April 28, 1853 MA-1185 G8b SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent.
We have handled only two issued notes from this series, both formerly from the Newman Collection. A SENC type from a bank that redeemed most of their notes, such as this rarity, before they became a National Bank in 1865. In this case, the successor redeemed the note in 1882, illustrating the bank's longstanding relationship with the community. This Danforth, Wright & Co. engraved note has a discrete "ABC" monogram for its post-1858 plate, despite its 1853 engraved date. At the center, three cherubic boys are shown at the wharf with various agricultural implements, and a little lamb as well. They curl around a large "5," which derives its stem from the stars and stripes held aloft. Flanking are "5" protectors. America is seated in a large "5" at left. Pynchon House, as engraved for the series, is at the right between "5" dies. The redemption stamp cancels noted by grading do not disturb the vignettes, and the "Small Edge Tears" have little effect on the importance of this note. The issued $1 note we sold realized $940 in Newman Part VII in 2015. Ex Eric P. Newman Collection where it realized $540.50 in the Internet Part 1 sale.

    Estimate: $400 - $600.
