Uniquely Styled "John Hancock" Engraved Signature Type

    Springfield, MA - John Hancock Bank $2 Jan. 1, 1857 MA-1180 G4a SENC. PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ.
This is another extremely rare and fascinating Massachusetts Obsolete with a uniquely styled layout. The bank became a National Bank in 1865 and redeemed its Obsoletes. Finely engraved by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., it shows an impressive signature of John Hancock across the top, in the style he used to sign the Declaration of Independence. At the bottom right is a large eagle and shield vignette within a panoramic street view. At the left is large red protector numeral "2," different from the shaded and outlined protector used on the plated note in Whitman. This is a stunning grade example that boasts crisp and bright paper. A scant few issued notes and proofs with the "John Hancock" engraved signature exist today from the bank, and most likely this is the finest.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
