Holliston, MA- Holliston Bank $3 Oct. 18, 1854 G6 Proof
A beautifully preserved proof with tremendous eye appeal that includes a portrait of Charles Sumner at lower left. Sumner was a United States senator from Massachusetts whose views on slavery made him anathema to many southerners. Two days after he delivered a particularly vitriolic speech on the floor of the Senate in 1856 denouncing the actions of those who would expand slavery into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska (and mentioning South Carolina's senator Andrew Butler by name as an accomplice to the "Crime Against Kansas)," Butler's nephew, South Carolina representative Preston Brooks, entered the nearly empty Senate chamber with a gold tipped cane and beat Senator Sumner nearly to death. Sumner became a hero to abolitionists, and Brooks a hero to southern hard liners, with Sumner absent from the Senate for three years while recovering from the attack. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, with the usual 4 POC.
