Fall River, MA- Metacomet Bank $5 Nov. 15, 1853 G8 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
The bank was chartered in 1853 and remained in business until it became the Metacomet National Bank, Fall River in 1865. The note features a very unusual vignette of a Native American family in a canoe very near the ocean shore apparently trying to spear a shark in the surf. An oval portrait of Jefferson Borden appears to the right. This note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. PMG mentions a corner tear that does not touch the portrait at lower right. There were two examples of this variety without the protector that appeared in the ABNCo Archives sale in 1990.

    Estimate: $600 - $900.
