    Description

    Eastport, MA- Passamaquoddy Bank $10 Nov. 1, 1821 MA G20 Wait 22
Arguably one of the most attractive early Obsolete notes we have encountered, this example is a Perkins Patent Steel Plate note. A large, ornate panel full of a variety of designs is seen at top. When the District of Maine became a separate state, this became a Maine bank by the same name. This design is listed in the Massachusetts section of Haxby, with the years of operation there listed as 1819-20, and also in Wait's Maine reference. The bank closed in 1826. According to Sylvester's Bank Note and Exchange Manual, published in 1833 by S.J. Sylvester, $5 notes dated 1819 from the Passamaquoddy Bank were altered to Bank of Portland notes. PMG Choice Fine 15 Net, with a small repair listed as the reason for the net grade. It has been ten years since we have been able to offer this design and denomination. That last example, a raw Fine, sold for $345 at our FUN 2002 auction. With a substantial increase in the number of collectors of Obsoletes over the past decade and a better awareness of the scarcity of some material, expect this note to bring considerably more when the hammer falls.
