Choice Issued Conway Bank $2 Note

    Conway, MA - Conway Bank $2 May 1, 1862 MA-500 G4b SENC. PCGS Very Fine 25.
Until the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive auction, notes from Conway were next to impossible to find. The $20 notes from the bank feature George Baldwin's Santa Clause vignette and were unknown until then. This issued $2 note engraved by Bald, Cousland & Co. with a later "ABC" monogram is impressive. The white drop-shadowed TWO at the center appears to float over the dizzying dies behind it. The title is bold and the "2" protectors are quite vibrant. At left, a seated mechanic is joined by a windblown sailor who holds a sextant and the stars and stripes flag. At right, two farm girls with bustled skirts hold aloft a sheaf of hay like caryatids. We know of only two confirmed issued notes (a $1 and a $3) from the bank, both in the same strongly held collection; they are illustrated in the Whitman Encyclopedia. Excellent paper body and margins. The style is exceptional.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
