Boston, MA- Howard Banking Co. Counterfeit $5 Aug. 23, 1858 C8a PMG Extremely Fine 40.
The bank opened in 1853 and remained in business until 1858 when it became the Howard Bank which went on to become the Howard National Bank of Boston in 1864. Although a counterfeit, this is still a very popular note because of the roof-top Santa Claus vignette (Durand Type I) depicting Old Saint Nick and his reindeer on the job on Christmas Eve. Many of the counterfeits are boldly stamped as counterfeits or are in low grades. This example, originally from the Slabaugh Collection, is a happy exception with no distractions worth mentioning by PMG.

    Estimate: $800 - $1,250.
