Baltimore, MD- Merchants' Bank of Baltimore $500 18__ as G36 as Shank 5.127.37 PMG About Uncirculated 55.
The bank was chartered in 1835 and remained in business until succeeded by the Merchants National Bank of Baltimore in 1865. The $500 note was undoubtedly intended only for commercial use and issued in limited quantities, if at all. The design has a classic RWH&E vignette of Moneta receiving coins from Mercury flanked by 500s in small counters and end panels on both ends. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. The sheet from which this note originally came was not part of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. Perhaps one of two known proof examples of this design.
