Bath, ME- Commercial Bank $500 18__ as G80 as Wait 42 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The Commercial Bank was incorporated in 1832 and closed in 1857. A $500 denomination would have only proven useful in major commercial transactions and was undoubtedly issued in very limited quantities, virtually all of which would have been redeemed. This note, printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines, has a vignette depicting two men walking with rifles, and another showing workers in a shipyard taking a break, flanking a large counter with 500. PMG notes a repair of a tear between the leftmost POC and the bottom margin. There were a number of examples of this design in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
