Opelousas, LA- Town of Opelousas 5¢ Oct. 4, 1862 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
Opelousas served as the temporary capital of Louisiana from late April 1862 until January, 1863 when the city fell to Union forces and the state capital was moved once more to Shreveport. This note was issued as part of a series emitted when the city was serving as the state capital. Printed in blue ink with few signs of circulation, this historic note will find a place in many Louisiana or Civil War collections, making no apologies for its condition. We have handled one other example of this denomination in recent years (three appearances) and this is a different variety with different border ornamentation.
