New Orleans, LA- The Crescent City Bank $10-$10-$10-$10 Back Steel Printing Plate and Sleeve G4a/G4b
The Crescent City Bank was in business from approximately 1857 until 1862 and seems to have always been on the brink of insolvency. In 1860 it was the recipient of a bailout from other banks in the city. This four subject steel plate was used by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New Orleans & New York and ABNCo to print the backs of the $10 denomination (Haxby G4a/G4b). It is very likely that this plate was held in New Orleans by the RWHE (and later, ABNCo) office located on Royal Street where S.A. Schmidt, who served as agent for both companies, produced notes and other fiscal instruments for local clients such as the Crescent City Bank. Schmidt later produced Confederate Treasury Notes, using the cover name of Southern Bank Note Co. out of this same location. The consignor has held this plate for over thirty years and it is not part of the dispersal of ABNCo plates, some of which have come onto the market in recent years.
This 10-10-10-10 plate is in very good condition with a few scattered areas of surface rust. Also included is the front panel of the original inventory sleeve in which this plate was stored. The description of the plate and the bank name are written in a bold hand and there are traces of other bank note impressions on the sleeve panel as well. Like its 5-5-5-5 mate, this plate is undoubtedly unique and will make a great addition to even the most advanced Louisiana collection. (Total: 2 items)
