New Orleans, LA- State of Louisiana/New Orleans, Mobile and Chattanooga Rail Road Company $1000 Bond Apr. 24, 1871 Very Fine.
This is the second example we have sold, with the other selling in 2009 for under $500. Five coupons are missing. The selvage also shows that this bond was under issuance of the New Orleans & Texas Rail Road Company. A couple of small edge tears are noted. This bond is signed by Louisiana Governor, H(enry) C(lay) Warmoth, who served from 1868-72. Carpetbagger Warmoth was probably the youngest governor in United States history at age 26. In 1872 he was impeached, but a trial was not held. He stabbed a newspaperman to death with a pocketknife in 1874. A few small edge and internal splits are noticed.
