    Description

New Orleans, LA- Patterson Iron Works/Jackson & Co. $1 Mar. 12, 1862 Fine.
The $1 denomination has an interesting vignette that includes tools of the iron working trade. Both companies named on this note were involved in the construction of the CSS Mississippi, a Confederate ironclad designed to protect the lower Mississippi River. The uncompleted ship was hurriedly launched on April 19, 1862 with the approach of Union naval forces led by David Farragut. Shortly afterwards, it was scuttled on April 25, 1862 to avoid capture by the enemy.
