Very Rare Banque des Améliorations $500

New Orleans, LA - New Orleans Improvement & Banking Co. (Banque des Améliorations) $500 March 6, 1838 LA-120 G12 SENC. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent.
A very rare high denomination from this Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, New-York engraved plate series. Like most notes from the bank, this features the unique top center vignette designed for the bank. The extremely long and well-detailed view of the St. Louis Hotel building shows throngs of people in the foreground involved in day-to-day activities. The bank titles are in French, Banque des Ameliorations, and English, New Orleans IMPROVEMENT and Banking Co. At the left end is a seated allegorical female over a 500/PIASTRES die. Liberty stands with a pelican shield at the far right. The $500 and $1,000 notes are the keys to this series and this denomination is SENC in Haxby. Noted with "Tape Repaired Edge Splits, Tears, and Damage." The $1,000 note from this series in Newman Part VI, PCGS Fine 15 Apparent, realized $2,820 in April 2015. This is its equal, or perhaps a superior rarity.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
