Rare "Premeire Municipalité" Red Back Note

New Orleans, LA - Municipality No. One (Premiere Muncipalité) $1/Une Piastre June 24, 1837. PCGS Fine 15.
The New Orleans Municipality numbered series notes from this period are complex, and many of the true rarities are not yet appreciated by collectors. This First Municipality note is one of those rare types. Printed from engraved plates by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, the vignettes and lathe work are exceptionally beautiful. A clipper ship under sail is at the center, with the French title, PREMEIRE MUNCIPALITÉ arced above. The obligations are under the vignette. At center left is a perpendicular vignette of a steamboat. At the right end is the French denomination UNE PIASTRE on lathe work. The vermillion back is very ornate, composed of die work, and is countersigned perpendicularly by the comptroller with a great vanity flourish. In very solid condition and a rare type.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
