New Orleans, LA- M. Condran & S.L. James One Load of Clay
A great opening to the collection of cardboard money and chits offered both in the Signature session as well as the Internet only portion of this sale. This piece was one of only three examples our consignor could obtain in nearly three decades of searching from any of the states of the old Confederacy, with all three coming from New Orleans. The only other specimen from this issuer we know of reposes in the rare book division of the New Orleans Public Library. Mr. Condran was a contractor and Mr. James was listed in the 1861 New Orleans directory as the Superintendent of the New Orleans City Railroad with its headquarters at the corner of Canal and Royal Streets.
