New Orleans, LA- Louis Willmer $1 Jan. 18, 1862 PMG Very Fine 20.
Willmer is an enigma; from a documentary point of view he simply does not exist. An extended search of newspapers, census records, and city directories has produced no results. And yet the scrip says that he was doing business in New Orleans at 135 Magazine Street in January 1862. Perhaps the new owner will finally be able to solve the mystery of this issuer's background. What we can say is that this attractive red and black note, printed on the backs of blue bills of exchange, is very rare. This is the only example we have offered in any of our auctions in recent years. History says that the opportunities to own a note from this issuer will be few and far between.
