New Orleans, LA- Louis Hubert / Confederate States Bakery $1
Although undated, this note was likely issued in early 1862 before New Orleans fell to a Union naval expeditionary force at the end of April. Both the City and occupation authorities made a concerted effort to take scrip notes like this out of circulation. Most New Orleans scrip notes, including this example, are accordingly very scarce to downright rare. This example is also notable due to its Choice New 63 condition as determined by PCGS. This combination of rarity and condition probably accounts for its strong performance in our 2010 IPMS Signature Auction when this example sold for $1,150.
