Engraved Date Series Leeds & Co. $3 Type

New Orleans, LA - Leeds & Co. $3 Dec., 1861. PCGS Very Fine 20.
This is a choice condition, very rare engraved "Dec. 1861" dated note, instead of the undated notes we have seen and auctioned in the past. Printed on white paper by Pessou & Shoun Lith N.O.; the imprint is also different from the Douglas printed $1 notes of which we know. Seated Commerce is at the top center leaning on a shield showing cotton plants. The title is across with the obligation underneath. A bold blue protector THREE is across the bottom. The left end has standing Agriculture. Standing Justice and seated Musical Arts are at the right end. The building Leeds & Co. occupied on Tchoupitoulas Street is still standing today. A choice graded, PCGS 25PPQ, $1 note from the undated series sold for $2,585 in our 2013 CSNS Signature sale. This different series and denomination is a significant type.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
