    Extremely Rare Insurance Bank Proof

New Orleans, LA - Insurance Bank of W.B. Partee & Co. 10 Cents July 1, 1851. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent.
An extremely rare India paper proof from this Insurance Bank and part of a nearly complete denomination set discovered in the Louisiana Newman Collection Obsolete albums. These three change denomination proofs complete the quintet and are the last available. This 10 cents proof is splendidly engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York & N.O. and printed on India paper only. The smaller size and obligation leads most to classify this as scrip, but the title is intriguing and the date of issue falls well into the New Orleans bank issuing heyday. Leftover notes from this issuer were later reused for printing by the State of Louisiana. At the top, seated Mercury holds a money bag aloft and leans on a coin-spilling cornucopia. Flanking are "10" circular dies. The $1 proof from this series in Newman VI, PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent realized $1,880. Noted with "Small Edge Tear at Top Left; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." This might be unique as a proof, and the $1 and $2 denomination in Newman Part VI were enthusiastically received.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
