New Orleans, LA- G.W. Holt 50¢ Jan. 1, 1862 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Holt ran a "coffee house" at 107 Gravier Street in New Orleans. He evidently issued prodigious amounts of scrip in the months leading up to the surrender of the city to a Union naval task force at the end of April, 1862. Although he participated in the city program to redeem his notes he obviously had under reported how much he had issued. He was suspended from the program in the summer of 1862. He had sold or lost the coffee house which was reopened by a new owner on July 15, 1862 and a July 31, 1862 newspaper story noted that Holt was "again" in court and had been given until that date to "furnish the means of redemption." We do know that he later lived with a relative, Asa Holt, who also had his scrip payable at the coffee house, in Mobile, AL. Based on the large number of notes still available, it is likely that Holt simply left town without making any progress on paying off his scrip. This 50¢ note, featuring a horse wearing a blanket, is one of the scarcer issues from the "Poster Child" of New Orleans scrip issuers.
