New Orleans, LA- G.W. Holt $3 Jan. 1,1862 Very Good-Fine.
Holt ran a coffee house at 107 Gravier Street in New Orleans and had the distinction of being one of the more prolific issuers of scrip prior to the fall of the city in April 1862. Both the city and federal occupation authorities subsequently required that the privately issued scrip be redeemed and withdrawn from circulation. Contemporary newspaper accounts suggest that Holt was none too successful in redeeming his issues (and those of a relative Asa Holt, of Mobile, Alabama, that were payable in New Orleans) as he made several appearances in court to answer charges that he was not redeeming his scrip.
