    New Orleans, LA- City of New Orleans $5 Jan. 1, 1863 PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ.
    The City of New Orleans issued a number of series of notes through the years to fund various programs, including the redemption of merchant scrip in 1862. This note was part of an issue authorized on December 8,1862 (Ordinance 6106) to fund taxes due and payable in 1862 and remaining unpaid on January 1, 1863. Newspaper notices in 1865 indicated that $199,940 had been redeemed and destroyed. We are presently aware of three examples of this note, with this being the finest by 10 points. The note has three small hole punch cancels.
