Earlier Series Citizens Bank of Louisiana Proof Rarity

New Orleans, LA - Citizens Bank of Louisiana $5 18__ LA-15 G10. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64.
This is a much rarer 1830s-1840s series and type from a bank title well known for its commonly seen remainder notes printed in the early 1860s. Like all the bank's issues, the titles and denominations are in English and French. A superbly crafted proof engraved by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. on India paper only. Top center shows a stone classical bank building representing financial strength. At the left, within a cartouche, is a standing allegorical female as Plenty and Navigation; at the right is a similarly placed standing female Agriculture. The left bottom corner has an intricately designed FIVE/DOLLARS counter, while the right has an equally marvelous CINQ/PIASTRES counter. Noted Hole Punch Cancelled as made, but with an excellent grade. The Haxby Plate Note was in the 1996 Western Reserve Historical Society Sale, and this type was not represented in the 1990 American Banknote Company Sale.

Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
