New Orleans, LA- Bank of Orleans $500 18__ G54 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Like the companion $50 note being offered from this bank in this auction, the $500 is a relatively simple design with a vignette depicting an allegorical maiden seated receiving Mercury with Poseidon in the distance and another depicting Justice standing at right. It is printed on India paper with no forms of cancellation present. The Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co. design is illustrated in Haxby with plate letter C but we are unaware of any public auction appearances by examples other than this B plate note since 2004. This leads us to believe that the surviving population of Proofs is probably around 2-3 or 4 notes.
