Exceedingly Scarce Natchitoches, LA Merchant Scrip

    Natchitoches, LA- V. Durand 25¢ Apr. 29, 1862
The first of a series of scrip from a merchant we have not been able to offer previously. An advertisement that was printed in the Natchitoches Union newspaper on May 15, 1862 stated "1000 Ounces of French Quinine at $8 per ounce, for cash. V. Durand." Victor Durand's store was located on Front Street next to a cigar manufacturer. According to an ad in the semi-weekly Natchitoches Times on June 16, 1866, Durand sold all types of goods from clothing to groceries, and "an extensive lot of other fancy articles for gentlemen, ladies, children, too long to be enumerated. Purchasers from the country and the citizens in general are invited to come and see for themselves the truth of my assertion in this advertisement, my prices will be the same for every one. You can send in your orders by your servants or your children, they will be filled to your best advantage. Remember my old store, on Front Street. Natchitoches, Dec. 27, 1865. Victor Durand." PMG assigned a grade of Apparent Fine 15 to this example, citing a small internal split at left as the reason for the apparent grade. An oval train vignette is seen at top center. The note, printed on thin brown paper with black ink and a green "25 CTS" overprint, appears to have been cut from the lower right corner of a sheet as wide margins are observed at right and bottom.
