    Description

Natchitoches, LA - Corporation of Natchitoches $3 Certificate of Deposit April 16, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.
This is a rarity, and only the second we have handled. Printed on the very thin brown rag paper used frequently for scrip notes from Louisiana in the period. At the center is a small vignette of a water pump. A very detailed obligation surrounds the vignettes with a bold "Three" at left and "3" at the right. The right end has fine text for the notes being backed by "N.O. Bank Bills and Confederate Treasury Notes" inside a pattern border. The note is "Stained," as mentioned on the encapsulation, but this is scattered foxing. The left end is roughly shaved off where the authorization act and pattern border was. This is illustrated by the only other example we auctioned in April 2013 for $1,762.50 graded PCGS Fine 15. That broadly margined note is superior, but this is seldom encountered and very collectible.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
