Inverted Back, New Orleans, LA-New Orleans Canal & Banking Co. $20 18__ Remainder
Obsolete inverts show up occasionally, but rarely do they capture the attention that this particular example will see. Many hundreds of Canal Bank sheets have passed through dealer and collector hands, with this, the first inverted example of the denomination we have seen. It's an unlikely survivor and we are surprised another example of the denomination has not surfaced. We do know however, that this error has occurred on at least one other Canal Bank sheet. In the Newman offerings last year, a $50/$100, 2-note sheet was offered with an inverted back. That piece was a trophy pair as the invert caused double denominations on each note, easily fetching more than $6000 for the uncut pair. This is a well-preserved example, with angels and cherubs as the main vignette. Choice Crisp Uncirculated.
