    Homer, Louisiana/Camden, Arkansas - Bi-State Issue

    Homer, LA- J.A. Avera 50¢ May 1, 1862 Rothert 90-8 PCGS Fine 15.
A truly rare bi-state note which was issued in Homer, Louisiana but was payable in Camden, Arkansas. The issuer, J.A. Avera, moved from Alabama to Camden in 1848 and opened a drug store, while also handling cotton and general merchandise. Avera's connection with Homer is not clear, although Homer, located in northern Louisiana, is only about 75 miles from Camden. Avera also issued scrip payable in Camden alone, with no mention of a Louisiana connection. PCGS notes small edge splits, tears, and minor damage on this rather attractively printed blue and red note that is datelined the day after New Orleans fell.
