Franklin, LA- Parish of St. Mary $3 July 19, 1862 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
Written date series. There are several varieties and this is the one printed on bright, white paper. Seated Agriculture at top with steamer in the background. Flanked by solid black "3" markers. Fascinating style "THREE" denomination counter below. "3 DOL'S." inside pattern bordered cartouche at left. Well signed and numbered. Payable "In Confederate Notes, When Presented in Sums of $20." Fractional denomination examples are plenty common enough, and so are some of the whole denomination pieces. For whatever reason, this $3 note is really very scarce and only the second we have ever sold (the other was a torn asunder rag). By comparison, in 2016 Newman sold a $5 note, grading a mere PCGS Very Fine 30, and it topped the $700 figure. This is a pristine example of this type.
