Centerville, LA- Smith & Hine at Stuart & James 50¢ Nov. 1861 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25.
    T. D. Hine is listed as a dry goods merchant in the 1860 Federal Census. It is believed that Smith & Hine, the issuer of this note was a later partnership. This series of notes was payable in New Orleans at Stuart & James who were commission merchants in that city, located some 200 miles from Centerville. Notes from this issuer appear on occasion, with the 25¢ value being the most commonly encountered. We have handled two 50¢ notes, including this example, in our past auctions. PCGS notes small edge and internal splits. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
