Exceedingly Rare Algiers, Louisiana Private Scrip

    Algiers, LA - T H. Thayer $1 Feb. 4, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.
This interesting and exceedingly rare Louisiana private scrip note is a highlight from the Newman Collection Louisiana albums. Algiers, situated on the high ground of the west bank of the Mississippi River, has been part of the city of New Orleans since its annexation in 1870. Part of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans was staged from the locale. This Confederate period note was issued shortly before the Union forces arrived there and the rebels destroyed much of the munitions, supplies and other wares at the shipyards. Printed on white paper. At center above a bright red ONE DOLLAR protector is an elaborate cartouche within which is an image of a train traveling along a curved track. End panels show red ONE DOLLAR. Noted are "Repairs"; however, the note is very solid and the signature visible. This is the first we have seen or handled.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
