    Description

    Wonderful Battlefield Annotation

Jackson, LA- Town of Jackson 10¢ Feb. 5, 1862
A neat note with a neat past. The note itself is a municipal issue from early 1862 and has an interesting black bear vignette. It is only the second example of this design that we have sold in any of our auctions. The neat past is captured by an inscription on the back that reads: "May 21st 1863. / Battle Field Store Plains / Captured after the fight / W.B. Kinsey / Lt. Colonel / 161st NY Inf." The battle of Plains Store was fought on May 21, 1863, resulting in a Union Victory that cut off the last escape route for Confederate forces from Port Hudson. The 161st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment is documented as having participated in the battle and Lt. Colonel William B. Kinsey is listed as one of its commanding officers. PCGS Very Fine 25 with stains, edge splits and tears, and a small tape repair on back at lower left noted. None of these are of any major significance or readily apparent through the holder. A truly wonderful Civil War piece.
