Wide Format Keokuk "Good for Ferriage" Scrip

Keokuk, IA - Keokuk & Hamilton Ferry & Manufacturing Co. $1 1858 Oakes 82-5 Remainder. PCGS Choice About New 55.
Another fascinating and rare Keokuk scrip that was "Taken for Ferriage," as seen in the right border obligation. Lithographed at Hosford & Co., New-York and printed in black on white bond paper. At the center, surrounded by the lengthy titles, is a small steamboat vignette. At the left end are two Native American hunters, one with a spear and the other carrying a bow. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" only by PCGS. This is another Iowa rarity, and its Rarity-6 listing in Oakes appears conservative. The 50 cents note from this series in Newman Part VII realized $2,820 after frenzied bidding. This is the first we have cataloged of this type, and it completes an amazing quartet of notes from this rare issuer from the Newman Collection.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
