Wisconsin Territory Series Dubuque $100 Note

Dubuque, Wisconsin Ter. - Miners Bank $100 Oakes 57-6, WI-125 G10. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 35.
This rare and unusual note from Dubuque is from the period when it was part of the enormous Wisconsin Territory (1836 to 1848). This territory included present-day Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and part of the Dakotas. The note is referenced under two states, Wisconsin and Iowa, but geographically, we consider this an Iowa note. Eric kept this note in his Iowa book. Tom Flynn, a native of Dubuque, owned the only $50-$100 post note sheet from this series we have seen. It sold for $9,775 in is his groundbreaking sale in September 2008. Printed about 1840, this Rawdon, Wright & Hatch engraved note is oversize compared with most demand notes of the period. At the top center are Mercury and seated Moneta. At the lower left is seated Plenty, and at the lower right, a Native American hunter drawing a bow. A bright example and an intriguing territorial designation type.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
