Significant Miners Bank of Dubuque $5 Tie Note

Dubuque, Iowa Territory - Miners Bank of Dubuque-Iowa Lead Mines payable at the Mechanics & Traders Bank, Cincinnati $5 18_ IA-5 G2, Oakes 58-1. Remainder. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent.
The first of three denominations from this rare series of unissued remainder notes, payable in Cincinnati, engraved and printed by the Western Bank Note & Co./Woodruff, Tucker & Co. We have seen very few notes from the series, and none were signed and issued. The titles are complex and the layout lively. A charming steamboat scene is at the top center. End panels have different classical cameo profiles in between counters. Like the other denominations, very attractively designed. The Tom Flynn Collection example in our September 2008 Long Beach sale realized a resounding $2,990 as a raw note graded About Uncirculated with a corner restoration. This is noted with "Hinge Repaired Tears; Mounting Remnants on Back," but faces up beautifully. A significant Dubuque rarity.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
