Extremely Rare Iowa-Ohio Tie Note 1838-46
Dubuque, IA (Terr.)- Miners Bank of Dubuque at Mechanics' &
Traders' Bank, Cincinnati $10 18__ Remainder G6 Oakes 58-3
PMG Very Fine 30.Banks often tried to use remote redemption partners as a way of slowing down redemptions. That appears to be the case here, as the Mechanics' & Traders' Bank of Cincinnati was some 500 miles away from Dubuque. The Iowa Territory existed from 1838-1846 and the Mechanics' & Traders Bank was in business (before becoming a branch of the State Bank of Ohio) from 1838-1844, narrowing down the probable issue timeframe to about six years. This is a handsome note without problems, printed on bright paper with full margins. Perfect for Iowa and Ohio collections that would benefit from having this historic tie note. These typically only appear when great name collections are sold...e.g. Newman, Flynn. In our FUN sale this year, we sold a nearly identical example, at this same PMG Very Fine 30 grade level, for over $3,000.
