    Davenport, IA- Burrows and Prettyman $3 Jan. 27, 1857 Oakes 30-2 / 32-2 PCGS Very Good 10.
This partnership started out as a dry goods business in 1843 and morphed into a mini conglomerate by the mid-1850s with interests in grain, hogs, and milling. 1856 found Burrows and Prettyman issuing bank notes on their own account, just in time to run headlong into the Panic of 1857. In order to avoid default, Burrows actually sold his home in order to redeem the remaining notes in circulation. This $3 note has an interesting center vignette of two barrels (presumably containing flour) with one being marked Albion Mills / J.M.P.B. / Davenport / Iowa. The note also has a large red THREE protector and vignettes depicting Ceres and a farmer sharpening his scythe. PCGS notes edge splits and tears, small edge nicks, and a tape repair at left.
