Davenport, IA- Burrows and Prettyman $1 Sep. 26, 1857 Oakes 32-1 (2015) PCGS Very Fine 30.
Burrows and Prettyman were originally engaged in a dry goods business and expanded into the grain and hog business as well as operating a grist mill. By 1856 they ventured into the banking business only to run afoul of the Panic of 1857. Ultimately, Burrows sold his home to redeem much of the remaining notes in circulation. This $1 features a large vignette of a farmer plowing and a large red ONE protector. PCGS notes edge splits and damage, hinge reinforcements, and minor mounting remnants on the back. Despite these relatively minor impairments, this example, the only one we have been able to offer in any of our sales, realized $1,762 in its inaugural appearance in our 2017 Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part III Internet Currency Auction.
