    Description

Council Bluffs, IA-Banking House of Baldwin & Dodge $2 185_ Remainder Oakes 26-2
The banking and land agency was formed by John T. Baldwin and G.M. Dodge in January 1856. Within a few years, their brothers ended up assuming and running the business. These notes circulated when small bills and silver had all but disappeared from the area in the late 1850s. The situation was relieved when the State Bank of Iowa came into existence in 1859. According to Oakes, the notes were printed by Ed. Mendel, from Chicago. This attractive $2 remainder has a reddish brown netting design and includes vignettes of a family shucking corn and three men holding a "2." Choice About Uncirculated, trimmed into the bottom margin at right.
