Terre Haute, IN- Commercial Bank $2 Aug. 3, 1858
A beautifully ornate note with four maidens engraved by master engraver W.L. (Waterman Lilly) Ormsby, this is a lovely About Uncirculated example. Importantly, this $2 has not been cancelled. Often these notes are seen with a small punch cancel. A counterstamp, "GUARANTEED AND REDEEMED AT/KEOKUK, IOWA,/BY THE/ KEOKUK EXCHANGE BANK" is often seen on these notes as is the case in this example. Ormsby believed that one of the best deterrents to counterfeiting was to include a vignette that covered the majority of the face of the note. A small edge nick is observed at the top margin.
