Muncie, IN- Fort Wayne & Southern Rail Road Co. $3(10) Oct. 2, 1854 Wolka 555-2
The history of this railroad is, in a word, exhausting. Chartered on January 15, 1849, the Fort Wayne & Southern managed to only accomplish about sixty-three miles of grading and other preliminary construction work before being sold at foreclosure on November 7, 1868. A complex series of ten sales, foreclosures, mergers, and acquisitions ensued with what had been the assets of the Fort Wayne & Southern finally ending up as part of Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1982! The notes of this railroad have always been a puzzle. Some crude locally produced notes were introduced in September, 1854, with more elaborately engraved notes printed in October, 1854 by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. Cincinnati. The second series of notes is seldom seen in extensively circulated condition suggesting they saw limited, if any, circulation. The next twelve lots contain collectively 2 $1s, 49 $5s, and 66 $3s of the engraved series that came into the possession of the consignor's family several generations ago. The consignor believes that his great grandfather probably acquired these when the family moved from Quebec to Bisbee, AZ in 1889-90 This lot contains 10 $3 notes printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co, Cincinnati. Each note has a vignette of Ceres seated holding an oval frame with a 3 in it, a large vignette of a passenger train crossing a viaduct over a canal, and a portrait of Daniel Webster. The notes grade Fine to Very Fine or better with some fold overs of corners but no repairs or significant damage. All are fully signed and issued. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason. (Total: 10 notes)
