Michigan City, IN- Michigan City and South Bend Plank Road Co. at Exchange Bank of H.J. Perrin & Co. $1 April, 1862 Wolka 498-1 / 1575-01 (2018) Very Fine.
This is a two state tie note, with the issuing location being Michigan City, IN and the redemption location being Marshall, MI, approximately 120 miles away. The plank road company was in business from roughly the 1850s into the 1860s and had built a plank road, as its name suggests, between Michigan City and South Bend, IN, a distance of some 35 miles. The signers of the notes were both residents of Marshall, MI suggesting that the notes were prepared for issue in Marshall and then sent to Michigan City to be placed in circulation. This long distance redemption ploy was widespread during this period. An attractive note printed by ABNCo.
