    Lowell, IN- William Sigler 25¢ Dec. 6, 1862 Wolka 460-2 / 1450-03 (2018) PMG Very Fine 25.
William Sigler is listed as a merchant in the 1860 census for Lowell and as "retired" in the 1870 census. Thousands of merchants issued tokens or scrip such as this note as a means of making change during the Civil War after coins disappeared from circulation. This large format note features two vignettes of children and one patriotic eagle and flag vignette in addition to a large green and white 25 protector. This example is the plate note in both (1978 and 2018) of the Indiana state catalogues and is the only note of any denomination that we have ever handled from this issuer in one of our auctions.
