Indianapolis, IN- Western Exchange Bank, Office in Indianapolis $1 June 15, 1856 Wolka 288-1
W.L. Ormsby printed this $1, featuring a portrait of Zachary Taylor and a scene of a bison hunt. As with so many of Ormsby's customers, not all was on the up and up with this institution. G.S. Hamer founded the bank in 1856 but was arrested around 1859 for passing counterfeit notes along with his own. Hamer fled the city, jumping bail in the process. This note has two stamps, one on each side, seemingly applied by Hamer to vouch for his own bank. Very Scarce with this being the first offering of a $1 from this bank, joining another single offering of an unissued $3 at our 2015 FUN auction.
