Goshen, IN- Town of Goshen at Salem Bank 10¢ Oct. 23, 1862 Wolka 242-2 / 0745-03 (2018) Fine.
The town of Goshen issued fractional scrip notes in October, 1862 payable at the Salem Bank, an Indiana Free Bank which had a location in town. Notes from this first interim series have "Corp Check" written in red ink. A later (December, 1862) series of notes has TOWN OF GOSHEN CORPORATION CHECK printed. Many northern cities and towns issued such notes to help alleviate the chronic shortage of coins during the Civil War. There are two small mounting hinge remnants on the back.
