Rock Island, IL- Rock Island Bank $2 (Fraudulent Issue) Nov. 1, 1852 G16 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The Rock Island Bank was organized as a Free Bank in 1852 but soon became a rogue fraudulent operation. The bank had its notes altered by substituting an official looking seal for the state auditor's die. Other notes, like this $2, were also redesigned, probably in an attempt to keep one step ahead of the authorities. The bank was only marginally successful in pulling this off, failing by 1855. This $2 proof appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale as part of Lot 373. It resurfaced in a 2015 public auction. We are unaware of any additional appearances in at least the last decade. This note is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines and has two stamp hinge remnants on the back accounting for PMG's "Previously Mounted" comment.
