Chicago, IL- Marine Bank of Chicago $1 18__ G4 Proof PCGS Apparent Very Choice New 64.
The Marine Bank of Chicago was organized as a Free Bank under the state's free banking act in 1852 and remained in business until 1863 when it became the Marine Company Bank. This history is unusual on two counts. Most Illinois Free Banks chose to be located in the smallest most remote hamlets possible as a means of avoiding redemption efforts and most had perished by the early days of the Civil War. Surprisingly, this design and the bank are not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. The note features the same center vignette of a passenger train that appears on Type 15 $50 CSA treasury notes. PCGS mentions that the note, which is mounted on cardstock, has been cut cancelled in the signature spaces and that there is a small stain below the word "bearer" at left. This is the sole example of this design that we have handled. Ex. Eric P. Newman Collection.
