Rare and Mysterious Wailuku 1893 Scrip

Wailuku, H.I. - Provisional Government Will Pay ___or Bearer $1 Nov. 2, 1893. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
This very mysterious 1893 Provisional scrip has never before been seen by noted Hawaiian specialists. Printed on white bond paper, it has a very distinctive embossed orange seal at the left with motto surrounding. The motto, UA MAU KE EAOKA AINA IKA PONO (The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness), is not structured perfectly and seems to be a mistake. It is also unusual that this is from Maui. However, the note has been in the Newman Collection for multiple decades and appears to be from the 1893 period based on its paper, printing and seal embossing. Now being offered at auction for the first time, it is certain to elicit much discussion among specialists. A fascinating Hawaiian note worthy of further research.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
