    Description

Savannah, GA- Planters Bank of the State of Georgia $5 June 1, 1860 G30a Proof PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.
The Planters Bank was organized in 1810 and was still in operation during the Civil War but had closed by 1866. The focal point of the design is a man sharpening a scythe blade on a stone being turned by a young slave boy. This vignette is flanked by two female portraits. The note is enhanced by two red V protectors, a red protector box over the signature spaces, and two bicolor counters. It is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines. Although known to Haxby, this design was not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. We are presently aware of four examples of this Proof design.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part II
